School of Public Health and Engineers without Borders Collaboration

Compone, Peru Assessment Trip
January 6-16, 2013

Background
In early December 2012, the School of Public Health (SPH) Dean’s office set in motion a plan to build collaboration with the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) chapter of Engineers without Borders (EWB). UMDs chapter has current projects in Peru, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia. A UMCP-EWB team has been meeting weekly in preparation for a trip to a rural community in Peru to assess previously implemented projects and to develop an improved water disinfection system. I was honored to be part of the first SPH team to join EWB on a trip, along with SPH graduate students, Graciela Jaschek and Greg Raspanti.

Sitting down over 24 hours with the other team members, I learned about their lives, and learned that each Engineer comes with an adjective. Among our group, we have civil, computer, bio, mechanical, and environmental engineers.  I also learned about aerospace, agriculture, chemical, fire protection, electrical, materials, nuclear, architectural, biomedical, and industrial engineers. I won’t define them all, but go ahead and test me. J
